The Tiger, scientifically known as Panthera Tigris, is India’s national animal. Before the tiger was designated as India’s national animal, the lion held the position. The Royal Bengal Tiger was officially designated as the national animal on November 18, 1972, and is often referred to as the ‘majestic creature.
As one of the rarest animals in the world, the Bengal Tiger is highly prized because of its beauty, strength, agility, and incredible power. Despite its captivating beauty and vital role in ecosystems, it faces the threat of extinction.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Government of India launched Project Tiger on April 1, 1973, to address this critical issue. By establishing dedicated reserves and protecting their habitats, this initiative aims to protect tigers. As of March 2024, 55 protected areas have been designated as tiger reserves under the project. According to the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the tiger is an endangered species.
Madhya Pradesh is the state with the highest number of tigers reported. Due to the high number of Tiger Reserves, Nagpur is recognized as the ‘Tiger Capital of India.
